Cannabinoids: Looking Back and Forward
Professor Raphael Mechoulam
Raphael Mechoulam, is Professor of Medical Chemistry and Natural Products at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He is the most important figure in cannabis research, he is called the “father of cannabis science”. In 1964, he isolated, determined the structure and total synthesis of the molecule Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), its main active ingredient. He worked on the discovery of the endocannabinoid system of the human brain and in his laboratory, until today, they study the potential of the plant.
He has published more than 460 scientific articles and is the head of the Natural Sciences Section of the Israeli Academy of Sciences. He has received many awards for excellence and recognition in his scientific career. Of the most prominent are the recognition of the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) that establishes an annual award in Cannabinoid Research and named it R. Mechoulam Annual Awards, since 1999. He is Doctor Honoris Causa from several universities, including: Ohio in 2001, the Complutense University of Madrid in 2006, the Ben Gurion University in Israel in 2013, the Maimonides University in Buenos Aires in 2017, Guelph University in Canada in 2018 and the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2019.
